An Hour-by-Hour Breakdown of Controlled Chaos
6:30 AM – The First Movement
Someone is awake.
No one knows why.
No one respects it.
You’ll hear:
- a door open
- a cough that sounds aggressive
- and possibly someone already moving around like they have something important to do
They don’t.
This is usually the same guy every year.
You hear classic comedies playing on a TV set up in the parking lot. Two guys, Turkish Silvers in hand, laughing like it’s the first time they’ve ever seen it, yet they recite it word for word.
7:15 AM – Coffee, Regret, and Denial
The early group gathers. Same eight to ten guys, sneaking over to the lounge to be the first ones to dip into the sausage gravy. You know who you are!
You’ll see:
- sunglasses indoors
- slow movement
- groans for things like….. opening the door!
- and a general unwillingness to discuss the night before
Phrases you’ll hear:
“I’m good.”
“Honestly slept great. Just can’t find my phone.”
“I just need to get moving.”
No one believes any of it.
8:00 AM – The Rebirth
Somewhere between coffee and the first swing…
…everyone becomes an athlete again.
The transformation is remarkable.
Backs loosen.
Confidence returns.
Stories get revised.
Breakfast and coffee is consumed by all over good memories and hardy laughs.
“I actually didn’t feel that bad last night.”
Sure.
8:45 AM – Second Wave
Winthorp and the NYC’s head toward breakfast.
Damn, none left? They head to the bar to order breakfast sandwiches (Except for Monte. Nothing but bagels for this guy! They ain’t gonna eat themselves!)
9:30 AM – Practice Makes Perfect
This is the most dangerous time of day.
Someone has:
- dragged out the Cornhole bags and started some 1V1 for $2 a game
- a dozen more join in and the next thing you know it’s full-on tourney time
- What time do we tee off? Not ‘til noon.
- Plenty of time for a few beers then.
- Spyderrrrrrrrrrr just grins (thought bubble…… Just you wait, my friend)
And now:
“I feel like today’s the day. Gonna stripe it pretty good today.”
This statement is legally binding… and will be disproven shortly.
11:45 AM – Group on the practice green readying for the noon start.
Food has been consumed.
Energy returns.
Bad decisions begin warming up in the bullpen.
Someone mentions:
“We’ve got a long day ahead…”
They are correct.
Just not in the way they think.
12:10 PM – Winthorp and the NYC’s roll in for the 12:00 Tee Time
Who’s my cart partnah?
Who’s my BFF today?
I’m driving!
Let’s get some beers and ice.
Anyone got a light?
At this point, golf becomes secondary.
The real focus shifts to:
- the playlist
- the vibe
- and whether “SpiderBite” has been played enough (it hasn’t)
At some point:
- someone sings too loud
- someone requests a song that will not be played
- and someone says:
“Play SpiderBite again.”
It is granted.
3:30 PM – Most groups have hit the back nine.
Now we enter the gray area.
You’ll see:
- Putter Throws
- Balls in the lake (and an occasional Loozer)
- Integrity is flexible.
Friendship is not. - Birdie horns sounding all over the back nine.
- Restrooms on every hole.
- Marshmallows
- Carts crossing fairways and sometimes roads.
5:00 PM – Groups have finished and assemble on the hill beside 18 Green
· Betting on tee shots into the green
· Betting on putts on 18
· Betting on ball toss on 18
· Yelling “100 feet”
· Sliding down the hill
· Fixing a dozen divots
· And Shot-gunning beers
· Winthorp and the NYC’s are three holes behind and having a blast!
6:00 PM – Off the course and over to the lounge for dinner
This is a critical time.
Some will:
- shower
- regroup
- mentally prepare
Others will:
- sit down “for a minute”
- and disappear completely
This is where Rule #4 (Disappearing) comes into play.
6:30 PM – Dinner & Story Inflation
Now the real competition begins.
Every story from the day:
- gets better
- gets louder
- gets less accurate
By the end of dinner:
- pars become birdies
- birdies become near-eagles
- and disasters become “you had to be there” moments
8:30 PM – Cornhole & Confidence
It starts casual.
It never stays that way.
At some point:
- teams are formed
- lines are debated
- and someone takes it very seriously
You will hear:
“Are we really arguing about this?”
Yes.
Yes you are.
10:00 PM – The Fork in the Road
This is where choices are made.
Option A:
- “I’m gonna call it a night.”
Option B:
- “Let’s keep it going.”
Option B always believes Option A is making a mistake.
Option A is correct.
11:30 PM – The Danger Zone
This is where legends are created.
You’ll see:
- questionable drinks
- louder music (I can’t hear ya. The music is too good)
- and decision-making at an all-time low
This is when:
- SpiderBites appear
- Jungle Juice gets mentioned
- and someone says:
“This is a great idea.”
It is not.
??:?? AM – The Unknown
Time no longer exists.
Events occur.
No one fully remembers them.
But they will absolutely be discussed next year.
Honey, Padre and the Rooks tidy up a bit.
Next Morning – The Audit
This is where everything is reviewed.
You’ll hear:
“Do you remember…?”
“What happened after…?”
“Who was that?”
Some answers are provided.
Some are avoided.
Some become stories that will never die.
Repeat.
Final Thought for Rookies
You will try to pace yourself.
You will try to stay in control.
You will try to make smart decisions.
You will fail.
And that’s exactly how it’s supposed to be.
Welcome to Golfapalooza
It’s not just a day.
It’s a cycle.
And once you’re in it…
you’re in it for life!
